Our Approach

Quality craftsmanship is equally important to us as sustainability,
which is why as a business,
it’s our mission to deliver both
to the best of our abilities.

Inspiration

In every situation, we believe that love must go on and we will go on in love. In even the most trying of times, the glue that holds us together is kindness, empathy and love – and creating jewellery entwined with these qualities and sentiments, is what fuels us as a team.

We are inspired by your individual stories and create every piece to order. This is true for our custom pieces as well as the three transeasonal collections we launch each year. We offer a personal and bespoke jewellery experience – whether you are ordering from one of the collections or you’re booking an appointment to create your own bespoke moment – our hands on, relaxed approach is focused on sentiment and connection. Because each piece is made by hand, it is entirely unique to you.

The Hand made process

Sustainability

With every piece of our jewellery handmade to order, we function as a minimal waste company. We only supply to demand, and do not create an excess of goods. Handcrafting our jewellery predominantly in-house, gives us complete control over the process - from sourcing and production to setting, finishing and packaging. We create one sample per season and then every single piece ordered in store or online is made specifically for each customer. These procedures and practices have largely remained the same since the inception of the brand, only expanding as we have scaled our production.

We approach sustainability as a journey, rather than a destination, especially in an ever evolving industry such as ours. This is undertaken with a great deal of responsibility, and with great investment - with our clients as our focus and our sense of moral responsibility as our drive. We hope to lead by example and hope that other jewellery companies will undertake similar initiatives to drive long term change, shifting to a point where this type of practice and level of consciousness becomes the normal not the exception.

our sustainability journey

Equality

We are committed to doing our part to make this world safe and equal for everyone. We have a beautiful multicultural team at our NMJ Head Office but we recognise that we are based in a community which is not culturally diverse. We pledge to promote diversity and consciously ensure inclusion and equality is reflected in our messaging.

As a business, and as individuals, we will listen, read, learn and educate ourselves on ways we can help to create a future where racial injustice and inequality is eradicated, and a world where men and women share equal rights and opportunities within the workplace. We currently have twenty-nine team members at head office in which 14 women hold senior positions. We acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and our Indigenous community in Australia suffers every day and we will do our best to be active allies in the fight for change. We have and will continue to donate to charities who fit with our fight for equality and we welcome any suggestions from our community as to ways we could do more.

If you’re interested in working with Natalie Marie Jewellery, we would love to hear from you.

Responsibility

We are a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council and are currently working to become accredited. This is an immensely in depth process, but one we are deeply invested in to ensure that we can really stand confidently behind the label of a ‘responsible jewellery company’. We are so aware of how commonplace the words ‘sustainable’ and ‘ethical’ are now, and that these have somewhat lost their weight - what we are really driven by is a desire to stand behind these claims with confidence that we are going beyond language and seeing this through in every facet of our practise as a manufacturing company and retailer.

Throughout this process, our focus has expanded far beyond our in house practices, which we have had a great grasp on for many years - to tracing material throughout every single step of the supply chain.

We work with a very tight knit network of suppliers, most of which we have worked with for the best part of a decade, it's these relationships and strong foundations which enable us to push our sustainability efforts forwards with great momentum.

We have recently partnered with accredited facilities both in Sydney and overseas to facilitate the expansion of our production to meet a growing demand, while we work on building out our own team to facilitate this in house. You can read more about our manufacturing avenues here.

FOLLOW OUR SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

NMJ Community

We support a host of charities annually and most recently, created a limited edition Golden Wattle Necklace to raise funds for Red Cross Australia and WIRES Emergency Bushfire relief funds.

We also proudly work with IMPACT - Partnership Africa Canada, a well established charity focusing on regulatory and legal reform, supply chain transparency, illicit trade and financing, gender equality and environmental stewardship in the precious metals and gemstone mining industries.

IMPACT envisions a world where resources contribute to equitable peace and development, and where communities are empowered to decide how their natural resources are managed.

We are sharing 1% of total online sales to IMPACT of every online sale processed via our online store, in an effort to support and give back to communities affected by mining in the jewellery industry.

Acknowledgement of Country

We respectfully acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the traditional custodians of this vast continent on which we at Natalie Marie Jewellery work, learn and create.

We pay our deepest respects to all Elders - past, present and emerging - who carry the life of this land in their spirit, and protect the traditions, rich cultures and the hopes of their people.

We strive towards an enriched appreciation of this cultural heritage, and a greater awareness of the truth of our history, so that we may move together towards reconciliation and healing as a nation.

2020 was a year of seismic shifts in so many aspects of human life.  The Black Lives Matter movement struck us to the core, encouraging each of us to search ourselves deeply. Once again, we are considering the true nature of our whitewashed history, and what we can do to be dedicated allies in creating lasting change.

We are exploring new avenues that we hope will lead to rich relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, and the communities that thrive around us.

To transform good intentions into action, we are collating an application to complete a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) through Reconciliation Australia.  Undertaking this journey allows us to enrich our understanding of the cultural history of this land, foster meaningful relationships with communities, and champion First People artists and culture in our showroom and across our social channels.

We will be educating our staff through cultural immersion activities such as walking tours, newsletters and taking part in NAIDOC week celebrations.  You will also read more on our social pages about the extraordinary achievements of activists, artists and leaders across the world.

We are learning every day and will continue to expand in our vision and practice to champion those who embody resilience and shine so brightly.

Story telling

So much of what we do at Natalie Marie Jewellery is centred around love. Whether it’s an engagement ring; a gift for a friend; a necklace to celebrate a milestone moment; or a forever piece to be passed down for generations to come, it is an honour to be involved in your story. We take great pride and care in crafting each piece for our customers, understanding the value and significance that they hold.

We also share stories of our customers and more of the NMJ story on our journal.

Client Stories

Family

NMJ is a family owned business led by Natalie and Daniel Fitch. We have a small, close knit team of twenty-nine who work from our Head Office and studio in Avalon. We have a specialised team of jewellers working in our studio who begin the process of crafting your NMJ piece as soon as we have received your order.

We are deeply committed to providing a safe, nurturing and progressive workplace for our team. We are passionate about professional development, especially with our manufacturing jewellers, as we see this as a way to ensure the continuation of our craft into the future.
